The JWAI24 Conference

Teaching in the Age of AI

An International Conference on Teaching, Writing, and Artificial Intelligence

25 October 2024

University of Florida

The University Writing Program at the University of Florida invites you to submit a proposal on any topic at the intersection of teaching, writing, and artificial intelligence. Since AI is already influencing our work today, and the future looks interesting, let’s have a conversation about it.

Call for Proposals

Whether discussing teaching, writing, or both, AI seems an inescapable topic. Between considerable interest and none, chances are that AI has upended, threatened, enhanced, or even transformed, in some measure, your work and the work of your students. Now that AI is entrenched, how has your teaching changed? Do you have any concerns? Are you excited? Has the use of AI in your classroom been a burden, boon, or bust?

Last year, we hosted a conference on writing in the age of AI. This year, we would like to focus more on teaching in the age of AI: teaching AI, teaching with AI, teaching for AI, teaching against AI, and teaching despite AI. We are looking for both forests and trees, approaches and assignments. We are as interested in your philosophies as your lessons. There are no litmus or ideology tests.

We invite proposals that address AI and teaching thoughtfully, dynamically, and compellingly. To these ends, we are interested in topics that not only span but also go beyond this list of possibilities:

Pedagogy

  • Lesson Planning with AI

  • Creating Assignments with AI

  • Lecture and Discussion Topic Ideation with AI

  • Revisiting Traditional Techniques with AI

  • What assignments have you invented for or against AI? What have you revised? What have you stopped?

Philosophy, Philosophies, Pragmatism, and Protection

  • Where are we now?

  • Where are we going?

  • What are we protecting?

  • What can we let go?

  • What should we be doing to prepare students for the future? How?

Process

  • Writing with AI

  • Evaluating with AI

  • How are your students using AI? How are you?

  • How are you teaching AI to your students?

  • Exercises, Strategies, and Techniques using AI

  • Case Studies of AI Technologies, Platforms, Services

  • Writing Center Tutors, Consultations, and AI

Policy, Policies, Policing, and Plagiarism

  • How are your programs, departments, and universities adapting and what are they adopting?

  • How have you changed your syllabi?

  • How have you changed your approach to reading submissions?

Promotion

  • Crafting Teaching Statements in the Age of AI

  • (Dis/En)couragement to Deploy or Avoid AI on the Market

We envision a lively, interactive conference experience full of papers, talks, workshops, presentations, and roundtable discussions. Submissions from graduate students and faculty of all ranks are welcome.
